During this ten-month programme, volunteers complete a Sports Leaders UK Level 2 Award in Community Sports Leadership that includes a training course in emergency first aid, attend a selection of Sports Coach UK workshops and participate in regular activity sessions. Having completed their training, volunteers are given the chance to apply the knowledge and skills they have gained to benefit the local community and also take part in a six-day teambuilding course based in Dartmoor National Park. This residential experience is delivered by Spirit of Adventure, one of the leading providers of adventurous activities in southern England. Volunteers who complete this challenging programme are awarded a coach development grant at their final team presentation. Exit pathways have also been established to help those volunteers who are interested in developing their skills further and identifying career opportunities in the local community. The trials can sometimes been misunderstood. The term ‘trials’ for young girls is a different process compared with boys. Although we are trying to select the best primary aged girls to represent Kent, the actual day consists of a relatively informal pairs kwik cricket festival. Girls may be nominated direct to the trials by schools and clubs. All the girls attending are divided into teams of 6 or 8, depending on how many there are. Everyone does their best while batting, bowling and fielding, and we just observe them playing. It’s a good day of cricket for everyone, and there is no pressure put on anyone to perform. There is a further ‘sweep up’ assessment session indoors in November before a squad of about 20 girls is selected in early December. Girls are introduced to hard ball cricket during indoor and outdoor coaching sessions from January to May. During trials, we will be looking for girls that: - • have some idea of how to play cricket • always like to be involved in the game • have hand eye coordination • are athletic • appear to get on with other girls Please get across the message that we would like to see lots of girls having a go and playing cricket, no matter how inexperienced they might be. The more girls that come along, the better. The main sports hall was divided into 4 main sports areas. Thanks to the help of volunteer coaches and helpers from the following clubs and governing bodies of sport: Medway Junior Badminton club, Black Lion Squash Club, Frindsbury Tennis club, Chatham Table Tennis club and Howard Table Tennis club 120 pupils ‘had a go’ at various skills and drills linked to these four sports. Pupils were also given a chance to learn about the local clubs (many of which are Clubmarked) to join if they are interested at a later date. Each sport devised 4 skills stations and coaches and student sports leaders (from Rainham School for Girls and Rainham Mark Grammar School) gave one to one instruction and coaching in those skills, so that each child could have a go for 3-4 mins and then move onto another skills station and eventually another sports area. The following schools had a highly enjoyable time learning about 4 different sports with transferable sporting skills: Featherby Junior, Miers Court Primary, Riverside Primary, All Saints Primary School, Elaine Primary, Thames View Junior, St Michaels Primary and Sherwin Knight Junior Schools. The organiser said: “Teachers, pupils and coaches gave us some excellent feedback on the way this event was structured; this was very much a team approach with all coaches and sports leaders giving up their time and expertise for the benefit of pupils. We will definitely run this event again.
