Nearly 100 girls from 8 different Medway Secondary schools competed in the tournament. 8 Medway Secondary Schools competed on the day, which included a Year 8/9 and Year 10/11 tournament. In the Year 8/9 tournament teams were split into 2 groups of 4 teams with the top 2 teams progressing to the Semi Finals. Group A was a tight affair with Chatham South topping the group on 7 points and Rainham School for Girls just qualifying for the semi finals ahead of Thomas Aveling school by 1 point. Group B was dominated by Rainham Mark Grammar School who reached the semi finals with a 100% record, unfortunately for them they found Rainham School for Girls too strong in semi finals and had to settle for 3rd Place by beating The Hundred of School for the second time. The final was contested between Chatham South and Rainham School for Girls, both teams could not be separated in the group stages where they drew 2-2, and the final did not disappoint for excitement with Chatham South winning a thrilling game 5-3. In the Year 10/11 tournament schools played in a round robin league format where Walderslade Girls B team caused a huge upset with winning the league from St John Fisher RC Comprehensive School. Walderslade Girls A team finished 3rd. The Fairplay award went to The Hundred of Hoo School, it is crucial that young people are introduced to sport in a friendly, positive environment and that they are encouraged to accept victory and defeat with equal grace. It is important that they learn to show consideration and respect towards opponents, teammates and officials, as well as to the rules and conventions of the different sports. There was a very friendly atmosphere and schools participated in a co-operative spirit of competition. Primary school pupils through to over-50s masters will take part in a range of events as Medway stages its first ever Festival of Sport. The festival, being staged at the new Medway Park regional centre of sporting excellence, will kick off with a six-a-side football mini world cup, where schools will do battle representing the 32 nations that have qualified for the main event. The festival will also host two inaugural Night of Champions competitions, when the highest ranked schools from the Medway Mini Youth Games and Secondary School Games will compete to be crowned Medway champions. The inaugural Festival of Sport is being jointly organised by the Medway Sports Development Team, the staff at Medway Park, and Medway School Sport Partnership development managers Kelly Harris and Claire Moore. Sports Development Officer John Hatchett said: “The festival aims to recognise all that is good about sport in Medway. The Mini Youth Games (MYG) Swimming Gala on Thursday, 28 January took place at the recently upgraded pool at Medway Park, the £11m new centre being created on the site of the Black Lion leisure centre. More than 250 children from a record 27 Medway primary schools took part in the hard-fought competition. Cheered on by crowds of enthusiastic supporters, each team of eight swimmers contested four individual races and the grand finale, the team relays. In a reversal of last year’s result it was Hempstead Junior School that emerged victorious, just beating 2009 winners from Kings School, Rochester. Third and fourth place went to St Margaret’s C of E Junior School and Bryony School. A major focus of all MYG events is on participation and sportsmanship, and the team from St Mary’s Island C of E Primary were awarded the fair play trophy. Medway Council senior sports development officer Tina Martin said: “It’s great to see the different level of swimmers in this event all competing together. “The gala is inclusive and as much about participation as competition as club swimmers, school swimmers and recreational swimmers all mixed in to compete for their school.” Swimming was the fourth event of the 2009/10 MYG competition - a multi-sport programme run throughout the school year for all Medway primary schools. Prizes are awarded at each event and points are gained towards the overall MYG title. The MYG forms part of the Medway Games series organised by Medway Council’s Sports Development Team with the support of Medway’s two school sports partnerships, national governing bodies, local sports clubs and leisure facilities. The team of Beth Hatton, Ellie Rogers, Grace Kelly and Leah Redhouse were crowned champions ahead of teams from Rainham School for Girls and New Brompton College. Just five points separated the three teams by the end of the day. The individual competition was also a close battle. Millie Gray from Rainham School for Girls scored 64.50 to beat Victoria Greenhow from New Brompton College and third placed Grace Kelly from Chatham South. More than 50 children took part in the competition at at Jumpers Rebound Centre, Gillingham, on Tuesday 21 January. The competition was part of the Next Step programme, which has been produced by English Gymnastics Schools to provide a progressive competition structure in basic trampoline skills for children from Year 7 to 11 who have not competed in a Regional Elite Schools Event or who are club members. There are two levels of competition: Step 1 and Step 2. Each Step is made up of three sections - body management – (performed on a strip of floor mats), set skills and set routine (on trampoline). The event was supported by young leaders from The Hundred Of Hoo School and staff from Jumpers Rebound Centre. The Secondary School Games is a multi-sport programme of competitions for Medway’s secondary schools. The awards were presented by sailing legend Ben Ainslie, a previous winner himself, and recognise the outstanding achievements of youth sailors across the country. Tom was voted RYA South East Regional Young Sailor of the Year 2009 last autumn. He is not only a keen competitive sailor at Wilsonian Sailing Club, based at Rochester, but has also made major contributions to his club and the local community. In particular, he has: • Organised sponsored sailings, which have raised close to £2000 for Children in Need. • Gained a Youth Opportunity grant for his club worth £10000 for the purchase of 4 new club training boats for Junior and Adult training. Tom put together presentations to Medway Council to apply for the grant, and has given updates on the use of the money. • Obtained his Sports Leader Award and become a qualified dinghy instructor • Played a major part in the Thomas Aveling school/club link to set up the link and the regular training sessions, as well as instructing at after school sessions. Tom was amongst thirteen RYA Regional Young Sailor of the Year winners who are voted for by RYA affiliated sailing clubs. These young sailors have made a significant impact on youth sailing, ranging from gold medal winning achievements and overcoming adversity, to the huge amount of hard work and effort they give back to their clubs.
