62% of GSSP pupils take part in 3 hours per week of PE and sport

27th September 2010

More children in Medway getting 3 hours per week of PE and sport!

National figures published on Friday show that 52% of young people from across the authority are now getting at least 3 hours of PE and sport per week. This is an increase from 26% in 2008-09. Medway’s two School Sport Partnerships lead by the two sports colleges in the area – Greenacre and Howard Schools, have worked with all Medway schools to raise sports participation over the past 5 years.

New activities, a range of coaches, access to more competitions and a chance to become a sports leader have all played their part last year for getting more young people in Medway schools involved in sport and physical education.

The Greenacre School Sports Partnership has 12 coaches, all linked to local club marked clubs, who have been able to go into the schools and lead sessions alongside teachers. After all this practicing teams were then able to take part in the Medway Games which consists of the Mini Youth Games for primary pupils and the Secondary School Games culminating in the Medway Festival of Sport week. Older students and sixth formers have been trained as sports leaders within their physical education lessons which has allowed for them to umpire and referee at the Medway Games series.
New activities for the schools in the Greenacre School Sports Partnership have included street surfing - also known as snakeboarding, rowers have been available for each of the secondary schools, urban rebounding – fitness with a small trampoline and wake up shake up – an aerobics idea for primary schools each morning have all helped to increase participation and ensure children are having fun while being active.

The Greenacre and Howard School Sports Partnership are working towards ‘The Physical Education and Sport Strategy’, originally set up in 2003 by the Government. To deliver this strategy School Sports Partnerships across the country are raising standards and participation in PE and school sport through; improving community and sports club links with schools, giving students opportunities to lead and volunteer in sport, raising quality and quantity of PE and after school provision, and ensuring ALL pupils have access to competitive opportunities. School Sport Partnerships provide a highly effective and efficient delivery mechanism for school sport. Partnerships are ‘families’ of schools working together. To find out more about what is going on in your school speak to your school sports co-ordinator in your secondary school or your primary link teacher in your primary school.

Want to play cricket for Kent girls?

3rd September 2010

Kent Under 11 Girls Cricket Assessment
For County Squad Selection for 2011 season

Venue: Kings Hill Cricket Club, Tiffen Way, Kings Hill, West Malling Kent

Date: Saturday 18th September 2010
Time: 1.30pm-6.00pm (approx. finish)

Kent Cricket Board would like to invite primary aged girls, (you must not have reached your 11th birthday by
midnight on 31st August 2010) to a cricket assessment day in order to select a Kent girls Under 11 squad for
winter training and summer matches for the 2011 season.

The trials can sometimes been misunderstood. The term ‘trials’ for young girls is a different process compared with boys. Although we are trying to select the best primary aged girls to represent Kent, the actual day consists of a relatively informal pairs kwik cricket festival.

Girls may be nominated direct to the trials by schools and clubs. All the girls attending are divided into teams of 6 or 8, depending on how many there are. Everyone does their best while batting, bowling and fielding, and we just observe them playing. It’s a good day of cricket for everyone, and there is no pressure put on anyone to perform.

There is a further ‘sweep up’ assessment session indoors in November before a squad of about 20 girls is selected in early December. Girls are introduced to hard ball cricket during indoor and outdoor coaching sessions from January to May.

During trials, we will be looking for girls that: -

• have some idea of how to play cricket
• always like to be involved in the game
• have hand eye coordination
• are athletic
• appear to get on with other girls

Please get across the message that we would like to see lots of girls having a go and playing cricket, no matter how inexperienced they might be. The more girls that come along, the better.

Many thanks for your assistance, but should you have any queries, do not hesitate to get in touch with David Sear: -
