Skip away from Fort Pitt
12th June 2010
On Tuesday 20th and Wednesday 21st April, pupils and staff from Fort Pitt Grammar School took part in ‘Skip away from Fort Pitt!’ This was a fundraising event for the British Heart Foundation. In teams of 4-6, pupils and staff frantically skipped up and down the length of the sports hall for 25 minutes, trying to collectively skip the most metres away from Fort Pitt. There were prizes for the team that skipped the most metres away. We then added the scores of teams in each year group together, which also gave us year group winners.
The individual team winners were a 6th form team, with a total of 3980 metres skipped!
The year group winners were the Year 7’s, who collectively skipped 11,610 metres!
The Year 11’s did a fine job skipping an astounding 64,450 metres (although the whole year group joined in as this was part of their PE lesson!)
In total, the whole school skipped a staggering 100,770 metres, which is the equivalent of skipping to Reading!
Well done and a big thank you to all who took part. All together we raised a mammoth £601 – not bad for the first year! Let’s make next year even bigger!
Kent and Medway Korfball Championships
12th June 2010
Kent and Medway Schools Korfball Tournament – sponsored by Kent Reliance
On Saturday 12th June the Kent Korfball Association (KKA) held its 10th Kent and Medway Schools Korfball Tournament at Rainham School for Girls, Gillingham.
In perfect korfball weather, twenty-eight teams from schools in Medway, Maidstone, Tonbridge and Malling and Thanet came together for a Korfball bonanza.
Nine under 9 teams, twelve under 11s and seven under 16 teams competed enthusiastically during the whole day, spurred on encouragingly by their parents, teachers and headteachers.
It was great to see new schools from Offham and Barming competing for the first time, with a special mention for three teams from Minster School, who with their teacher Tammy Kentfield travelled all the way from Ramsgate by coach.
Members from all the Korfball clubs in Kent rallied round to help on the day, helping to sort out the pitches, undertaking refereeing commitments, serving on the BBQ and tuck shop and running the control desk. Although the clubs may be great rivals on the pitch they are unified in their commitment to develop junior Korfball in the county and their efforts are paying off.
Dan Miles and Steve Green from the English Korfball Association (EKA) coaching staff also paid a visit to the event to scout for any budding international stars, and seemed impressed with the enthusiasm of the younger competitors.
To give the tournament a more professional flavour, Martin Woolmer brought along korfball equipment, Korfball trolleys and promoted his newly designed Multikorf post which proved to be a very popular attraction. It was also great to see Steve Barker who was kept busy selling Korfballs and equipment to all the budding Korfballers.
Finally to round off the perfect day, Anna Jeanes the EKA Chairperson kindly presented the trophies and medals to the winners and runners up in each section.
The KKA would like to thank the Kent Reliance Building Society for sponsoring this event.
Final Results:-
Under 9s – Halling Harriers, Barming Bandits, Hilltop Hotshots, Mighty Minster, Minster Raiders, Saxon Way Phoenix, Bligh, Barming Bombers and Parkwood Panthers.
Under 11s – Roseacre, Fairview, Offham, Hilltop Fliers, Hilltop Hurricanes, Halling hawks, Horsted Hornets, Horsted Hippies, Deanwood Dragons, Bligh, Allsorts (a mixed school team) and Mighty Minster.
Under 16s – Maidstone, Rainham/Howard, Rochester/Math, Aylesford, Strood Academy, Rainham Mark 1 and Rainham Mark 2.
In the under 16 section some single sex schools had to join together the form a team. In fact the only school whose two teams were made up entirely with its own pupils was Rainham Mark, with some of year 7 players having to compete against year 11s which was a very tall order. None the less they battled on and learnt a great deal from the day.
Many thanks to everyone for their support during the day.
