Mini Youth Games ‘High Five’ Netball Tournament
Thursday 22 April 2010
Rainham Netball Centre, Rainham School for Girls

Volcanic ash may have prevented the largest Mini Youth Games in history, with a record entry of 41 schools entered before the Easter holidays, but with some teachers still stranded abroad after the break it meant that 5 schools had to withdraw from the tournament. However, 350 children from 36 school teams still participated at the Mini Youth Games ‘High Five’ Netball tournament, held at the Rainham Netball Centre, Rainham School for Girls on Thursday 22 April 2010. It was to prove an excellent day with some great netball skills displayed and some close games resulting in a tight and thrilling finish to the league table!

The main event enabled each school to play an amazing 8 netball matches in an even draw against all other Medway schools entered. The points were collated through the day with the top three teams not losing a game throughout the day and it all coming down to goal difference, with Wainscott Primary School coming out winners and also claiming the best placed small school for the second year in a row! They had an impressive goal difference of +111 from St Andrews (2nd) with +61 and The Pilgrim School a close 3rd with +55. These schools will be joined by St Mary’s RC Primary School (4th) at the MYG Night of Champions at Medway Park on Wednesday 23 June 2010 during the inaugural Medway Festival of Sport week.

Fair Play Winners Walderslade Primary School
1 Wainscott Primary School
2 St Andrews School
3 The Pilgrim School
Best placed small school Wainscott Primary School

Games were played to the All England Netball Association ‘High Fives Netball’ – where there are only five players on court instead of seven and players rotate positions at half time, so that the whole squad gets an opportunity to play in a variety of positions e.g. central, defence or attack. This is the mini version of the sport for primary aged children, where both boys and girls are encouraged to play.

The Mini Youth Games (MYG) is a multi-sport programme of events running throughout the school year, open to all Medway primary schools. The scheme is organised by Medway Council’s Sports Development Team, with the support of Governing Bodies of Sport, local sports clubs and the many volunteers who give up their time to support these events. Prizes are awarded at each event and points are gained towards the overall Mini Youth Games title for which a perpetual shield is awarded at the end of the year:

At each event points are awarded to each school for simply taking part. This is the main emphasis of the Mini Youth Games – enjoyable participation so the most prestigious prize at any event is always the fair play award. This award was won by Walderslade primary school, it is crucial that young people are introduced to sport in a friendly, positive environment and that they are encouraged to accept victory and defeat with equal grace. It is important that they learn to show consideration and respect towards opponents, teammates and officials, as well as to the rules and conventions of the different sports.

The sports development team would like to thank everyone involved in making this event so successful.

The next Mini Youth Game event in the series is the MYG Kwik Cricket festival, on Thursday 27 May 2010, at High Halstow Cricket Club.
