MYG Badminton Results

Wainscott Primary School celebrated a double victory at MYG Bdminton by winning the tournament and picking up the highest placed small school in the process.

Over 150 children from 20 Medway primary schools took to the courts at The Stirling Centre on Thursday, 26 November for the third event of the 2009/10 MYG calendar.

Each team played six games during the day, and both Wainscott and Featherby Junior School remained undefeated. They could not even be separated on Games won, as they both shared the same record. In the end it was decided on the amount of individual points scored during the day giving Wainscott a narrow victory over Featherby by only 10 points.

Third and fourth place went to Elaine Primary School and Sherwin Knight Junior School. They will join Wainscott and Featherby in a new Night of Champions competition next summer as part of the new Medway Festival of Sport.

A major focus of all MYG events is on participation and sportsmanship, and the team from All Saints Primary School were awarded the fair play trophy.

Medway Council Sports Development Officer John Hatchett said: “This was a great event and there was a good, friendly competition atmosphere throughout the day.

“It’s great to see one of the small schools like Wainscott winning the big prize at the MYG, it just shows how open and competitive this year’s series is going to be.”

The MYG is a multi-sport programme of events run through the school year for all Medway primary schools.

It forms part of the Medway Games series organised by Medway Council’s Sports Development Team with the support of Medway’s two school sports partnerships, national governing bodies, local sports clubs and leisure facilities. Prizes are awarded at each event and points are gained towards the overall Mini Youth Games title.

Secondary Schools Badminton Competition

19th November 2009

Rainham Mark Grammar School and Sir Joseph Williamson’s Mathematical School dominated the Secondary School Games badminton tournament by making both the Key Stage 3 and 4 finals. Rainham Mark defeated The Maths School 2-1 in the Key Stage 3 event, but the Maths School bounced back to win another tight game 2-1 in the Key Stage 4 final.

Over 80 children from 7 Medway secondary schools took to the courts at Medway Badminton Association, Castlemaine Avenue, Gillingham on Thursday 19 November.

Both tournaments consisted of 2 groups of 4 teams, with the top 2 schools in each group qualifying for the semi finals. The Key Stage 3 tournament also saw The Howard School A and B team make the semi finals, with the A team winning the 3rd Place play off. The Howard School also snatched 3rd place in the Key Stage 4 event by upsetting Chatham Grammar School for Boys.

A focus of all SSG events is on participation and sportsmanship, and the team from The Hundred of Hoo School were awarded the fair play prize.

All winners have now qualified to represent Medway in the next Kent schools tournament, so a big well done to them.

Recognition for Medways Sports Stars at the Medway Sports Awards

The 2009 Medway Sports Awards winners were announced at the gala dinner on Friday, 6 November 2009 and are listed below.

Club of the Year - sponsored by Ramada Encore Hotel, Chatham

Gold: Tornadoes Korfball Club and Academy
Tornadoes won the British Korfball Association Club of the Year and Coach of the Year titles in 2009.
Tornadoes have won numerous titles at all junior age groups in recent years, including three national championship victories last season.
The club is committed to promoting Korfball to all and has 66 families involved with the teams and training every week.

Silver: Jumpers Trampolining Club
Jumpers has enjoyed another successful year, with a particular focus on developing gymnastics ahead of the opening of the new Medway Park gymnastics centre in 2010
Other key successes include the introduction of gala weekends and impressive team and individual results in regional and national competitions

Bronze: Sherwood Cricket Club
Sherwood CC has gone from a club that was struggling to survive to one recognised throughout Kent as an aspiring, well-run cricket club.
The club has gained Clubmark and Focus Club status and has seen membership grow rapidly to more than 120 players.

Gold: Rainham Eagles FC
Rainham Eagles has teams ranging from under-7s to men’s teams and has enjoyed many successes in recent years.
The club has achieved Charter Club status and is committed to promoting good practice and respect. It runs free open days to introduce new players and works with local schools to provide qualified coaches for community sport.

Silver: Meridian Girls FC
Meridian Girls FC currently has more than 100 girls playing in seven teams. It has Clubmark and Charter Standard status and won the Kent FA Charter Standard Club award for 2008.
In 2008 the new under-10 side won the Tina Marshall trophy, the under-12s and under-16s picked up the managers, supporters and players fair play awards and three teams were runners-up in the Kent Girls and Ladies league.

Bronze: Medway Junior Badminton Club
Medway Junior Badminton has more than 175 registered juniors, including 25 county players.
The club works closely with schools and supports the promotion of sport in Medway, including holding social badminton evenings for families.
It constantly strives to improve standards in coaching, playing and administration.

Gold Award: Men’s Double Mini Tramp (DMT) Team
For many years Matthew Swaffer, Dominic Swaffer and Jason Plowman have been at the top of their sport in DMT and remain unbeaten in the National Finals.
This year they did the clean sweep - Matthew gold, Jason silver, Dominic bronze and the trio team gold.
Matthew and Dominic will represent Great Britain at the World Championships next week, with Jason team reserve.

Silver Award: Gillingham FC Men’s First XI
Medway’s only professional football team restored pride last season by bouncing back after relegation at the first attempt, with promotion as League Two Play-Off Champions.
More than 30,000 supporters joined the team in May as Simeon Jackson’s last minute header clinched promotion at Wembley.

Bronze Award: Holland and Blair FC Men’s First XI
Hollands and Blair FC have risen from the ranks of a local junior football club to achieve a feat unique in Kent football history.
In 2009 they completed the unprecedented hat trick, winning the Kent County League Premier Division, the Kent Intermediate Challenge Shield and the Bill Manklow Inter-regional Challenge Cup.

Gold: Rainham Cricket under-13s
Rainham Cricket under-13s enjoyed an excellent season in the Medway Youth Cricket League, winning the league title, undefeated in 12 games, and also winning the Medway Cup knockout competition.
A total of 21 boys made appearances at some stage during the season, with seven also playing at senior adult level for the club. Six boys represented Medway in district competitions and three were part of this season’s Kent Emerging Spitfires under-12 side.

Silver: Medway Dragons RLFC under-12s
The new Medway Dragons Rugby League under-12s competed in the London Junior League, facing experienced teams from all over London.
Despite their inexperience, they won game after game and firmly established themselves at the top of the table.
They eventually made it to the play-off semi finals, narrowly missing out on the final by one converted try after a spirited comeback from 24-0 down.

Bronze: Invicta Dynamites under-14s
The Invicta Dynamites ice hockey team won three titles last year - the under-14 Southern B League, the under-14 Southern Cup and the International Tournoi in Dunkerque.
In the league, the Dynamites won 13 games and narrowly lost just one tie. They top-scored with 138 goals and had the best defensive record.
They were unbeaten in both the Southern Cup and the Dunkerque tournament.

Coach of the Year - sponsored by University of Kent

Gold: Mark Stimson
Following Gillingham’s relegation from League One just months after his appointment, Mark Stimson gutted the side that had suffered relegation and, working on the tightest of budgets, rebuilt his team from scratch. Stimson transformed a side that lost 0-7 at Shrewsbury in September into the team that would win promotion at Wembley just eight months later against the same team.

Silver: Vance Young
Vance coaches junior players at Medway Badminton Association and does considerable one-to-one coaching at its Castlemaine Hall centre.
A good number of his players have been selected to play for Kent and England, with the outstanding performance this year coming from Daniel Groom to win the under-19 national singles title. Vance is now coaching Daniel as part of the England programme.

Bronze: Martin Brockman
Martin has a group of 20 athletes with a wide range of abilities, including several county champions and English Schools competitors.
Martin is a decathlete himself but dedicates much of his time to setting and running individual and group training programmes and sessions and travelling the country to support his athletes in competition.

Gold: Mandi Dyble and Sheila Abbott
Mandi and Sheila have run the kitchen at Medway RFC for around 10 years, providing food for hundreds of Rugby Union players, referees and officials.
They also run the shop, are holders of the club’s diary and keys and even order and wash the team kit.
Mandi is Chair of the ladies’ section and runs quiz nights and discos.

Silver: Keith and Denise Short
Denise and Keith Short started the junior section of Higham and Mockbeggar Cricket Club in 2006 with just a handful of players. Since then the junior section has grown far beyond anyone’s expectations.
They now have teams in the under-15, 13, 11 and 9 age groups and only take one month a year off from cricket.

Bronze: Alan Bourne
When Medway RFC’s Alan Bourne broke his leg badly a few years ago, he taught himself a new skill set and for the past three seasons has been webmaster and official photographer.
Alan has recreated the website (http://www.mrfc.net/index.html)with dozens of pages for all the teams, being the main support network facility for the successful Clubmark application.
He submits match reports to the press, constantly updates the website and has written a book tracking the First XV’s recent unprecedented success.

Gold: Gerry Donovan

Gerry is the PE Co-ordinator at Wainscott Primary School, which has been awarded the Sports Active Mark for the second time and achieved good results in Mini Youth Games Tournaments this year.
He runs a number of after-school clubs, including girls’ football, which led to the school reaching the quarter-final of the Kent Girls’ Cup. He regularly gives up his spare time to coach pupils and his enthusiasm motivates pupils to achieve and fellow teachers to run clubs.

Silver: Sam Simmonds
Despite relinquishing the role of PE Co-ordinator and primary link teacher at the beginning of this year to concentrate on other leadership responsibilities, Sam continues to take responsibility for the provision of some clubs and the training of some teams.
She has displayed a great deal of commitment and enthusiasm over the years, encouraging participation by all, especially the involvement of Hempstead in the Mini Youth Games and other festivals and competitions.

Bronze: Sue Marrable
Despite only working part time, Sue does her utmost to maximise playing, coaching and learning opportunities for pupils and staff at Riverside Primary School.
She has been involved in organising several firsts, including whole-school sports days and outdoor and adventurous activities festivals.

Gold: Martin Laws
Martin continues to pioneer major success for Jumpers Trampolining Club.
After seeing Gary Smith through to the Olympics, Martin has gone on to produce further up and coming international and senior elite competitors.
Martin has been coaching and mentoring for more than 30 years and is an international performance coach and judge. He also sits on dozens of committees locally, nationally and internationally.

Silver: Barry Archer
Barry has committed more than 35 years to teaching and developing karate in Medway as the driving force behind UK Bushido Karate.
Key achievements and innovations in that time have included sending members to train around the world, founding a competition squad, joining with other organisations and introducing an NVQ award to the club.

Bronze: John Mitchell
John has been at the heart of many cricket activities in Medway over the past decade.
He has provided support and direction to the Cricket District Development Group, establishing a network of volunteers, recruiting coaches and ensuring a structure of strategically placed clubs, many with Clubmark and England and Wales Cricket Board Focus Club Status.

Junior Sportsperson of the Year - sponsored by SportsAid

Gold: Jake Frame
Jake is accepted as the up-and-coming star of British water skiing.
At the British National Championship in 2009 he took second place in the junior category, despite using a smaller horsepower engine than his fellow competitors. He also finished second in the overall support race rankings against adult skiers and engines many times more powerful.
He was selected as the junior reserve to represent Great Britain in the 2009 World Championships and was named Most Improved Junior at the 2008 British Water Ski Award.

Silver: Emily Evans

Skiier Emily has just finished four years on the Great Britain Children's Ski Team.
Despite an injury-struck start to last season, Emily won the English Championships, British Championships and Irish Championships.
She also skied for the England team, competing in national colours successfully across Europe.

Bronze: Victoria Loftus

Victoria started the year as a Special Olympic World Gymnastic gold medallist and three-time bronze medallist.
In 2009 she won a gold, two silvers and a bronze at the Special Olympic National Games, despite having only six weeks to prepare her routines.
Victoria also took silver at the National Championships in the pilot scheme for special needs trampolining and is now part of the national squad.
Closer to home, Victoria was fourth in the Kent Closed mainstream trampoline event.

Sportsperson of the Year - sponsored by Hempstead Valley Shopping Centre

Gold: Matt Haines
Matt rounded off a successful 2009 season with selection for the Walker Cup, the amateur equivalent of the Ryder Cup, as the second youngest member of the eight-man team.
He is currently ranked sixth in Europe and 17th in the world amateur rankings.

Silver: Jason Plowman
Trampolinist Jason competed finished 13th at the National Championships and trialled for the national team for the World Championships in a routine with the highest difficulty tariff.
He won bronze in the double mini trampoline (DMT) National Finals and also took third spot representing Great Britain in at the Albacete International Cup in Spain. He was a reserve for the World Championships which took place in St Petersburg in November 2009.

Bronze: Daniel Groom
Daniel Groom trains at Medway Badminton Association’s Castlemaine Hall and this year won the All England Under-19 National Badminton Championships.
He went on to represent Team England at the European Championships in Milan, where they took team bronze.
