Go Ride hits Medway!

The second Medway secondary school cycling competition was today hosted by the Sir Joseph Williamson Mathematical School for year 7 pupils. Teams of 8 raced around a cross country track set around the grounds of the school. The hosts took the first place in the team competition (although maybe they've had a little more practice!) with Robert Napier 2nd and Greenacre 3rd. The best individual performers will now be invited to a Medway cycling academy and entry into the Kent cyclo cross.

David Beckham Academy

Please note the Greenacre SSP has received news about our allocated visit to the David Beckham Academy on Tuesday 13th and Wednesday 14th January 2009.
On Tuesday 13th January 4 pupils in yr 5 or 6 from every Junior or Primary School will be elligilble to attend.
On Wednesday 14th January 10 pupils in yr 7 or 8 from every Secondary School will be elligible to attend.

Medway superstars rewarded

The University of Kent @ Medway today played host to the annual Medway Sports Awards to celebrate sporting achievements and efforts in the area.
Athlete Shaunagh Brown was the only double winner of the night, walking away with the trophy for Sportsperson of the Year as well as being named as one of Medway’s two sporting ambassadors for 2008. Shaunagh, 18, is one of the country’s leading throwers and recently won a bronze medal in the discus at the Commonwealth Youth Games in India. She will be joined in the sporting ambassador role by long-course triathlete and 2008 World Championship bronze medallist Alex Fairman, 22.
The sport of judo was the other big winner of the night. Medway elite athlete and British Schools Champion James Lewis, 16, was named Junior Sportsperson of the Year while his coach John Malkinson won Coach of the Year. Rainham Judo Club’s Terry Malkinson was recognised with the Lifetime Contribution to Sport award for his work within the sport at local, regional and national level, while club volunteer Margaret Bridges won the Unsung Hero award for more than 20 years of tireless service.
Gillingham Jumpers Trampolining Club were named Club of the Year with our very own Trampoline Gymnastics Coach James Coomber being nominated for coach of the year. While Invicta Dynamos Ice Hockey Club won the Junior Club of the Year title. The Team of the Year were Medway and Maidstone Athletics Club’s senior men’s team and the Junior Team of the Year were the Black Lion Swimming Club under 14 boys’ relay team.
Additional categories were added to this year’s Medway Sports Awards to recognise the importance of PE and school sport in Medway.
Sherwin Knight Junior School in Strood was named Primary School of the Year for PE and School Sport, with Abbeycourt and St Thomas More Primary School winning 2nd and 3rd awards. The Robert Napier School in Gillingham took the senior school title while Greenacre School came in second.
The crown of Sports Teacher of the Year went to Pam Fincher from Rainham Mark Grammar School with third place going to Sarah Inwood - for her excellent work as a School Sport Co-ordinator within the Partnership last year.
The Medway Sports Awards are organised by Medway Council’s Sports Development Team and sponsored by the Medway Messenger and University of Kent.

St Margarets Vs St Margarets!

St Margarets School Rainham edged victory today over St Margarets @ Troy Town School at the MYG Rugby event. This was an excellent for St Margarets @ Troy Town who have been receiving coaching from Medway Rugby club prior to the event and were also the winners of the Best Placed Small School. Featherby were placed 3rd with Balfour 4th. Leaders from SJWMS, Medway Rugby club and the Medway Sports Leaders helped to officiate and support schools.

Jumpers host teachers training day

Today Jumpers Rebound Centre played host to the training day for the PE co-ordinators of the Greenacre School Sport Partnership. The day consisted of new ideas and concepts for getting more young people engaged in PE and sport. Kelly Harris, James Wheeler, Jodie Pearson and Michelle Pender led the morning sessions in Top Activity, Multi Skills and Wake 'n' Shake. After lunch, James Coomber led the fun with all teachers being let lose on the trampolines, the tumble pit and the gymnastic beams!
